A Real Fish Story
Amazing things happen from time to time....
Last night Marlin's rookie pitcher, Anibal Sanchez, threw a no hitter in only his 13th game in the major leagues.
While this is an amazing feat for him, it also sumarizes a surprising year thus far for the Florida Fish. Not only did they fall to 20 games below .500, they also have climbed back into the wild card race and now have a record above .500.
The situation in Florida is a facinating one. In their 14 years they have 2 World Series titles and 4 NO HITTERS!!!! You would think that fans would continue to flock to the gates, however playing in southern Florida in Dolphin Stadium has allowed them to continually have one of the lowest attendance figures in baseball.
2006's team is made up predominantly of players who in any other organization would still be in the minor leagues. 13 of their roster players are making the league minimum and several players in the bigs make more than the entire team payroll (which is less than half of the next closest team). The Marlins lead the league in cost per victory by a very large margin. While the Yankees are over 2 million dollars, Florida comes in at just over $200,000 per win.
Amazing.
